RACE RULES

RACE RULES
The Sunshine Coast Triathlon is run in accordance with the International Triathlon Union (ITU), Triathlon SA (TSA) and Amathole Triathlon (AMT) rules. The following is an abridged version of the main rules. The full ITU rules can be viewed on www.triathlon.org
 
COMPULSORY RACE NUMBERS AND BODY MARKING
All athletes (except swimmers from the team event) will be given race numbers which need to be worn on the back during the cycle and
on the front during the run.   All athletes (including swimmers) will be body marked. This will be done at registration and prior to athletes entering the transition area.
SWIM
1. Brightly coloured Swim Caps are COMPULSORY for all events. NO SWIM CAP, NO RACE. Due to the sea swim, NO BLACK, WHITE, SILVER OR BLUE swim caps are permitted. This is to allow the lifesavers and officials to clearly identify the athletes in the water.
The use of WETSUITS will be determined on the day and announced 1 hour before the start of the event.
Water temperature: Above 22 degrees - NO wetsuits permitted. Below 14 degrees- wetsuits compulsory.
2. NO pushing, shoving, pulling or blocking is permitted
3. Swimmers MUST SWIM AROUND THE BUOYS and not take short cuts, failure to obey this rule will result in disqualification.
BICYCLES
4. NO HELMET, NO RIDE. Swim caps and helmets must be produced for inspection at bike check in. Only approved hard shell helmets.
5. This is a NON DRAFTING EVENT.
6. HELMETS MUST BE CLIPPED ON and worn during the duration of the cycle leg. DO NOT un-clip or remove your helmet on re-entry into the transition area before your bike is racked. You will be stopped to re-clip your helmet. Make sure your helmet is securely fitted. As a self-test, push your helmet from the front over your head. If it moves beyond your forehead then the helmet straps must be tightened accordingly. You will be stopped, if in the referee's opinion your helmet is not secure enough. (10 second Time penalty once the helmet is re-secured)
TRANSITION
7. No cycling is permitted in the transition areas
8. Only the cyclist will be allowed into the transition area, and will be allocated a wrist band that will gain him access. Athletes will only
be permitted to remove their bicycles from transition once the last cyclist has finished the ride leg.
CYCLE
9. An UPPER BODY GARMENT MUST BE WORN during the cycle leg of the event. No nudity is permitted. (One piece suits must be zipped and both “straps” of the top or vest must remain on the shoulders)
10. Traffic rules must be obeyed. DO NOT ride over the centre line (solid or staggered) unless otherwise instructed at each venue by the Chief Referee. Keep left and pass right. Obstructing, blocking and physical contact is not permitted, failure to obey this rule will result in disqualification
RUN
11. An UPPER BODY GARMENT MUST BE WORN during the run leg of the event. No nudity is permitted (One piece suits must be zipped and both “straps” of the top or vest must remain on the shoulders) Footwear is compulsory
throughout the run leg.

 

GENERAL
A COMPULSORY pre-race briefing will be conducted 15 minutes prior to the start of the event where any additional instructions will be given. Regular instructions will also be announced over the public address system.
This is an individual event and no seconding or assistance may be rendered to any athlete during the event. This includes the handing of kit, water bottles, puncture repairs etc. No unauthorised vehicles permitted on the course
TSA / ITU / ATA rules are there to protect the athletes and to prevent unsportsmanlike behavior. It is in your and your fellow athlete's best interest to race in a safe and fair manner. The referees are there to ensure the safety of the athletes and to ensure that unsportsmanlike behavior is addressed with the appropriate penalties.
Should any rules be unclear you are welcome to consult with the Chief Referee on the day prior to the start of the event.
